Virtualization and ASE
Virtualization (at the operating system level) seems to be quite the rage today ... more and more customers that I visit are talking about it, but I'm wondering, how many of you are actively using it, or are planning to deploy it on Linux (and run Sybase underneath)?

Proposing presentations for Techwave.
Deadlines. Why is it that they always seem either very far off or far too close? The deadline for submitting proposed topics for presentations at Techwave is fast approaching. Actually, the original date has already past but it was, as usual, extended for us procrastinators. I gave a presentation last year (on ASE Traceflags) and it was easy to come up with that topic – people have been asking for more information on traceflags for as long as I’ve been supporting ASE. Preparing and giving the presentation was quite rewarding, and after returning to the office after Techwave I quickly scribbled down a few ideas for presentations for the next year and then promptly forgot about it. Until the reminder notice that the deadline for proposals was fast approaching hit my mailbox a week ago.
It is a good thing that I’d scribbled down those ideas a year ago. I tend to draw a blank when trying to come up with topics to speak or write about – I’m far better at generating a reply to a specific topic. Having trouble coming up with topics is curious, as people think I know a lot about ASE. And perhaps I do. But my problem is in gauging what other people don’t know about it, and what they would be interested in hearing about. Trying to write this blog has brought that home – I just don’t know what to write about most of the time. I suppose it is something I’ll just have to make into a habit.
Anyway, back to Techwave presentations – if you have an idea for one and would like to present it, I encourage you to submit a proposal. (If you have an idea but don’t want to present it yourself, let me know.) Details on how to write a proposal are available at http://www.sybase.com/techwave, and you have until the 30th to submit. Although it may sound daunting, the proposal itself doesn’t have to be more than an abstract or outline (though more is, presumably, better), and topics geared toward novices are certainly accepted – I sent in proposals for three this year, all geared towards novice DBAs. There will then be a long, long delay (I speak from experience) until you know whether or not the topic was accepted. Then the next thing you know the deadline for having a robust, fully prepared presentation will be a week away… but isn’t that how it goes?
To give you an idea of how little is required for a proposal, as an example, here is one of the three I submitted this year (note that I don’t yet know if it is a successful proposal!).

Reading the ASE Errorlog. (Product: ASE, Target Audience: DBAs, Level: Novice)
This presentation first walks through a typical ASE errorlog line by line, describing what each line means as ASE boots up and recovers databases, then walks though some atypical output including a few common warnings and errors, deadlocks, timeslice errors, infected with {4/10/11} stacktraces, and configurable shared memory dump (CSMD) generation, and finishes with instructions on how to configure a CSMD.

What are DataServices?
There has been a lot of activity in SOA but something new that we have started to hear is the term "Data Services". As usual anthing to do with services tends to get pulled in all directions, same as happened with Data Services. Let me try to make it better/worse with my view of what is Data Services.
